Skala

At the southern side of Kefalonia one can find Skala, a new village that was rebuilt after the disastrous earthquake in 1953 that raised the previous village. Every summer Skala is considered an excellent place to visit with lots of tourists choosing the nice, sandy beach to enjoy a swim in the crystal clear waters.

Situated almost 35 km. from Argostoli and 12 km. from Poros, Skala has many hotels and rental rooms that offer great stay in a peaceful environment. Most of the appartments and hotels are rated with three and four stars, providing every comfort needed. In the village you can find restaurants, bars and super markets, covering all the needs a visitor can have. Small stores that can be found in every corner offer souvenirs. In case you decide to eat at a restaurant don’t pass over the dish “bianco”, a tasty fish soup with garlic that is served with crunchy bread!

Just as in any other place in Greece, Skala features two great archeological sites. About 2 kilometers from the village one can find the ruins of an old temple of Apollo (Olympian deity of music, truth, healing, prophecy etc.). One can also visit a roman villa that is saved to date and features a stunning mosaic floor! In Skala you can also find the cave of Sakkou, a place where archaeologists found signs of the prehistoric era. The temple of St. George is an excellent combination of ancient Greek and Byzantine architecture since it was rebuilt with parts of the temple of Apollo after the earthquake of 1953!
